Dirtbags Win Third Consecutive Series with Victory over CSU Bakersfield

Long Beach State responded to Saturday’s loss with a 5-2 win over the ‘Runners on Sunday.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Long Beach State (24-26, 12-12 Big West) took the series finale, 5-2, over CSU Bakersfield (17-29, 10-14 Big West) on Sunday afternoon. The win gives the Dirtbags their third consecutive series victory.
Following up his no-hitter last weekend, Juaron Watts-Brown got the start on Sunday in Bakersfield. The redshirt freshman went 3.2 innings before allowing a single up the middle to snap an impressive streak of 15 consecutive innings without allowing a knock. For the day, he had some control issues issuing four walks in five innings of work. He surrendered two runs, both earned, on two hits while striking out six 'Runners.
The Dirtbags got on the board early with a run in the top of the second on an RBI single from Tanner Carlson. The 1-0 lead would only last until the fifth when Bakersfield plated two to take the lead.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the seventh, Long Beach State would rally for two runs and reclaim the lead. After a leadoff single and error put two runners aboard, Rocco Peppi would send a double down the right field line scoring both runners.
Freshman Peyton Schulze would come through in the clutch once again in the top of the ninth, sending a single through the left side with the bases loaded. The knock brought home two runs to give the Dirtbags some insurance runs heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Devereaux Harrison would enter out of the bullpen and after allowing a leadoff single, pick up two strikeouts and a popout to secure his fourth save of the season.
Splitting the gap between Watts-Brown and Harrison was sixth year veteran, Matt Fields. The right-hander threw three scoreless innings allowing just one hit while striking out a pair. His season ERA is down to a 1.60 after his team-leading 19th appearance.
Peppi and Pimentel led the offense in Sunday's victory. Peppi went 2-for-5 with the game-winning RBI while Pimentel went 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored. Eddie Saldvar extended his hitting streak to 12 straight with a 1-for-3 effort while Chase Luttrell saw his come to an end.
The Dirtbags are down to just six games left in the season. They return to Bohl Diamond at Blair Field next weekend for a three-game set with rival Cal State Fullerton.
