The seventh-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team (18-10) was edged by No. 2 Pepperdine, 3-1, in an MPSF quarterfinal match at Firestone Fieldhouse Saturday evening. Set scores were 22-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-20.
A low-scoring series came to a close with another tight game but for the first time the Long Beach State Dirtbags came out on the wrong end of it. The Dirtbags (18-19, 5-3 Big West) fell 2-1 in the series finale to 17th-ranked UC Santa Barbara.
Ciana Wagner and Morea Wagner captured the Bracket C championship Saturday at the Big West Challenge, leading the 49ers in pairs play in the final day of the regular season. Janisa Johnson and Tyler Jackson also represented LBSU in a championship match, reaching the finals of Bracket A.
Josh Frye went the distance for the Long Beach State Dirtbags in a 1-0 win over the No. 17 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Friday night at Blair Field. Frye, a product of local Long Beach's Millikan High School, needed to throw just 91 pitches in his first career complete game shutout.
