Long Beach State fell 7-3 as they drop their first conference series of the season.
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Long Beach State (12-10, 3-3 Big West) suffered a 7-3 loss in the series finale to CSUN (13-10, 2-4 Big West) on Sunday. It marks the first conference series loss for the Dirtbags since the season opener at Hawai'i last season.
Juaron Watts-Brown got the start for the Dirtbags, but struggled out of the gate as the Matadors tagged him for three runs in the bottom of the first. He ended up lasting just 2.2 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks.
After the Matadors three-spot to start the game, they pushed two more across in the third before Long Beach State answered with a run in the fifth. CSUN would eventually tack on one more in the sixth and one more in the eighth.
The Dirtbags scored a run in each of the eighth and ninth innings on solo home runs from Tanner Carlson and Rocco Peppi. The homer for Carlson marks the first of his collegiate career while Peppi's was his third.
Overall, Peppi led the offense with a 3-for-5 game out of the leadoff spot. He finished a triple shy of the cycle on the day.
Peyton Schulze also notched a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 as the cleanup hitter on Sunday. Carlson's pinch hit home run and a Sebastian Murillo single were the only other hits in the game.
Out of the bullpen, Jake Rons and Josh Haley each had nice outings. Rons tossed 3.1 innings allowing just a home run while striking out two. Haley threw the final two innings, only allowing one hit and one unearned run with a strikeout.
The Dirtbags will play one more road game before returning to Bohl Diamond at Blair Field as they head to Malibu, Calif. on Tuesday for another midweek matchup with Pepperdine.
