Dirtbags Fall in Series Opener to No. 15 Gonzaga

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State fell 7-2 in their series opener with No. 15 Gonzaga (11-2) on Friday night. The Dirtbags (5-7) matched the Zags in hits, but never got the big hit with runners on base.
With Luis Ramirez scratched from his start, Jake Rons got the ball in the series opener. The right-hander threw three innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out a pair. The first two runs came in the top half of the first on a Stephen Lund two-run homer to left field.
The Gonzaga offense would plate another run in the third and fifth innings before the Dirtbags were able to respond.
With the bases loaded, a soft roller in front of the plate gave the Zags a force out at home but the throw to first on an attempted double play got away allowing Eddie Saldivar to hustle around and score from second.
The 4-1 score lasted just an inning as Gonzaga put up three more runs in the top half of the sixth to blow it open to a six-run ballgame.
The Dirtbags attempted a ninth inning rally, plating one run and threatening with the bases loaded and two out. Unfortunately, a grounder to first base would end the ballgame giving the No. 15 ranked Zags a 7-2 series opening victory.
Chase Luttrell extended his hit streak to 24 and his reached base streak to 32 consecutive games with a 2-for-5 night out of the leadoff spot. The junior also notched the only Long Beach State RBI on the night.
Rocco Peppi stayed hot with another two-hit game. He now has multi-hit efforts in four of his last five games and has his average up to .282 for the season. Tyler Porter also turned in a two-hit night, going 2-for-4 out of the five-hole in the lineup.
The Dirtbags will look to bounce back tomorrow in game two against Gonzaga. First pitch from Bohl Diamond at Blair Field is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
