Eighth Inning Home Run Gives No. 6 Dirtbags 5-4 Loss

2/26/2022 6:29:00 PM | Baseball

Long Beach State drops their home opening series.

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The No. 6 ranked Dirtbags (2-3) battled back to tie the game in the late innings, but another Sacramento State (6-0) home run proved to be the difference as Long Beach State fell, 5-4, on Saturday.

Sacramento State struck first with a run in the top of the first and then three more in the second piecing together three hits and a pair of walks against Dirtbags starter, Marques Johnson. Johnson lasted just 1.2 innings, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks while striking out a pair.

The 4-0 Hornet lead would hold until the bottom of the seventh as Sac State's Noah Lucchessi held the LBSU offense in check with five shutout innings, scattering seven hits. He would hand the ball off to Tyler Stewart who tossed a scoreless sixth before the Dirtbags got to him an inning later.

After the organ-played seventh inning stretch, Kaden Moeller and Sebastian Murillo got the inning started with back-to-back hit by pitches. After a pitching change, Tanner Carlson connected on a ball down the right field for a two-RBI double. Chase Luttrell followed with a missile off the top of the center field wall for an RBI triple to cut the deficit to one. Jonathon Long tied things up with a single into left.

Jake Rons stayed in the game on the mound for the eighth and surrendered a solo homer to Steven Moretto putting the Hornets back out in front, 5-4.

That lead would hold as Jack Zalasky shut down the Dirtbags in the ninth to pick up his third victory of the season.

Jack Noble was outstanding in relief of Johnson once again. The sophomore right-hander came out of the bullpen, escaped a bases loaded jam, and threw five scoreless frames allowing five hits and a pair of walks while striking out four. He is up to 9.1 consecutive scoreless innings to begin his 2022 campaign.

Luttrell followed up his two-hit performance on Friday with a three-hit effort today, going 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Carlson also collected three knocks on the day, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Dirtbags will look to salvage a game in the series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch from Bohl Diamond at Blair Field will be at 1:00 p.m.
