LONG BEACH, Calif. - Head women's water polo coach Gavin Arroyo announced the signing of five players to National Letters of Intent during the fall signing period to play at Long beach State. Ashlee Coleman, Katie Larrea, Katlin Mackle, Alex Manuli, and Taylor Ryle make up the 2014 recruiting class for the 49ers.
Ashlee Coleman, a four-year letter winner in water polo at Clovis High School, won Division 1 CIF Central Section championships her sophomore and junior year. Coleman recorded four goals for No. 1 Clovis in its 13-10 victory over No. 2 Clovis West during her junior campaign. The Clovis, Calif. product also earned first-team all-conference as well as first-team All-CIF along with fourth-team NISCA All-America honors after recording 68 goals her junior year. The 5-10 center wrapped up her senior campaign with 74 goals and led Clovis to a Division 1 CIF Central Section Runner-Up finish. Coleman also earned lettered in swimming all four years at Clovis.
Arroyo also signed another 5-10 recruit in Katie Larrea who was born in Long Beach, Calif. Larrea led Enumclaw Senior High School to a third-place finish at the Washington State Championships with 148 goals while earning first-team All-South Pugent Sound League as well as first-team All-CIF her junior year. After the break-out season, Larrea also earned NISCA fourth-team All-America honors. The three-year letter winner in water polo and swimming is also a part of the Pacific Northwest Olympic Development Program and plays club water polo for PNW Shores and San Diego Shores.
The 49ers also welcome Katlin Mackle as part of the 2014 class, a utility player out of La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad, Calif. Mackle comes to Long Beach State having earned first-team All-Avocado West League honors her junior year as well as second-team All-Avocado West League during her freshman and sophomore campaigns. The four-year letterman is set to start her final season this upcoming spring.
Next up is Alex Manuli, a 5-11 driver from Alhambra High School, lettered all four years in both water polo and swimming. Manuli had a stand-out junior year with 141 goals and 70 steals earning her first-team Division 1 All-NCS. The Martinez, Calif. native followed up her junior campaign with 107 goals and 79 steals to wrap up her career at AHS while holding the all-time scoring record.
Long Beach State rounds out its 2014 recruiting class with Taylor Ryle, a two-meter player and driver from Clayton, Calif. Ryle lettered all four years at Clayton Valley Charter High School earning first-team All-Diablo Valley Athletic League her sophomore, junior, and senior year recording 129 goals. The Clayton, Calif. product was also named to the NCS Senior All-Star team after netting 48 goals with 49 steals and earned first-team All-CIF North Coast Section her senior year.
