LONG BEACH, Calif. - Long Beach State's women's water polo player Christina Kotsia was recently named to the Greek Women's Senior National Team that will compete in the FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain Sunday, July 21 through Aug 2.
"The World Championships is something totally different than what I'm using to participating in. It is a huge event with all of the top athletes but its going to be a great experience for me!" said Kotsia. She also noted that its every athletes dream to represent his or her country in the Olympics. When asked about her own goals and aspirations in regards to the Olympics, "I may be one step closer to playing in the Olympics, but I need to put in a lot of work and effort in order to succeed and represent Greece in the Olympics. Nothing is permanent so I have to work hard each and everyday."
As a true freshman, Kotsia was second on the team in scoring with 50 goals. The Athens, Greece native was also solid in penalty shots for The Beach converting 12-of-15 opportunities. She also led the team in scoring 11 times while owning a team high 17-game scoring streak. Kotsia also earned ACWPC All-America and All-Big West Honorable Mention accolades during her freshman campaign.
Greece will open up pool play with USA, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist, on Sunday, July 21. They will then continue with Great Britain and conclude pool play with Canada.
The senior women's team is coming off a second-place finish at the Dutch Water Polo Trophy Tournament after falling to the United States 11-7 on the final day of competition.

Kotsia will also add to her international resume two weeks after the world championships as she competes in her home country of Greece at the 10th FINA World Women's Junior Water Polo Championships held in Volos, Greece with the junior national team. The women of Greece look to improve on their sixth-place finish back in 2011.
Greece opens up the tournament on August 18 but their first opponent has yet to be confirmed. The Greeks will kick off day two with Spain and finish Group A pool play against Canada.
