LONG BEACH, Calif. -

After being named on the All-Big West First Team, senior Alexis Butler and sophomore Virginia Smith completed a successful 2016 campaign with Honorable Mention honors on the 2016 Association of College Water Polo Coaches All-American team.

Butler, the Stockton, Calif. native, had a breakout season in her senior year at Long Beach State to cap of a spectacular 2016 season. Aside from the career-highs she was able to make this season, Butler has been a force in front of the net to lead LBSU to its first ever Regular Season Big West Championship. This year, she earned her first All-Conference and first All-America honors.

The sophomore out of Maple Ridge, B.C., Smith had an outstanding sophomore season to add on to her career at the Beach. She led the team in scoring with a career-high 45 goals after scoring in 26 of LBSU’s 29 matches. Smith finished as the eighth leading scorer in the Big West Conference. In just her second year, Smith earned her first All-Big West and All-America honors.

The last Long Beach State All-American honor came in 2014 by senior Coriann Snyder, who grabbed the second nod of her career. Although the time has ended on Butler, Smith has the opportunity to repeat her chances of another All-Big West and All-American honor in her upcoming years as an upperclassman. If so, she will be just the sixth 49er in LBSU women’s water polo history to earn multiple All-America honors during her career.
