Third-Seeded Long Beach State Heads to Davis for Big West Tournament This Weekend

April 25, 2017

Long Beach, Calif. -

Long Beach State turns its attention to the postseason this week as the Beach treks up to Northern California to compete in the Big West Tournament. LBSU will begin tournament play against sixth-seeded UC Santa Barbara on Friday at 2 p.m.

1. UC Irvine (21-6, 5-0)
2. Hawai'i (14-10, 4-1)
3. Long Beach State (16-11, 3-2)
4. UC Davis (15-16, 2-3)
5. CSUN (11-19, 1-4)
6. UC Santa Barbara (15-12, 0-5)

Long Beach State is coming off a hard-fought loss to No. 1 Seed UC Irvine last week in its regular season finale. Even though the Beach was on the losing end, LBSU still finished the regular season by winning five out of its last eight games. Freshman goalkeeper Eirini Patras played arguably her best game of the season against UCI as she gathered 16 saves, two five-meter penalty stops and a steal.

UC Santa Barbara comes into the Big West Tournament having lost six out of its last 10 games. UCSB has been consistently ranked inside the Top 15 the entire season, but the Gauchos did not have much luck in conference games this year as they went 0-5 against Big West opponents. UC Santa Barbara won the Big West Conference Title in 2016 as the No. 3 seed.

These two teams met less than two weeks ago in Santa Barbara for a regular season conference matchup. The game ended up going into six overtimes and lasted about two hours as the Beach topped the Gauchos 8-7 in the fourth sudden death period. If that game was any indication, the first round matchup between Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara should be one to watch.
