April 18, 2017

Long Beach, Calif. -

After a thrilling six-overtime win over No. 12 UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State welcomes No. 6 UC Irvine to the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center for a conference matchup this Thursday at 7 p.m. The Beach currently trails the Anteaters by one game in the Big West standings.

THE BEACH (16-10, 3-1 Big West)

LBSU comes into its final regular season contest having won five out of its last six games. Christina Kotsia and Virginia Smith have carried the offense lately as both have recorded multi-goal efforts in five straight games. Kotsia is approaching the 50-goal mark as she leads the team with 48 and Smith now has 37 goals scored which is second on the team. Goalie Eirini Patras has continued her steady freshman season as she finished with double-digit saves in LBSU’s win over UCSB. All phases of the game will have to be at their best down the stretch as Long Beach State looks to upset No. 6 UCI this week and make some noise in the Big West Tournament later this month.

UC IRVINE (19-6, 4-0 Big West)

The Anteaters are hot coming into the last week of the regular season. They have won 10 straight which includes a perfect 4-0 record against conference opponents. UCI has many quality wins this season including victories over Michigan (twice), Hawai’i (twice) and Pacific. Offensively, Irvine has three players who have scored 40 or more goals this season. Mary Brooks leads the team with 49, McKenna Mitchell is second with 42 and Kelsey Thornton is third with 40. Brooks, Mitchell and Thornton are responsible for the bulk of the Anteaters’ scoring as no other player on the team has more than 15 goals scored this season.

After its final regular season game on Thursday against UC Irvine, Long Beach State will travel up to Davis for the Big West Tournament which will take place from April 28-30.
