LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Junior Chelsea Parks was named this week's Big West Conference Player of the Week for women's water polo Wednesday afternoon. Parks led the 49ers to a 3-1 finish, defeating three ranked opponents, to claim fifth-place at the Triton Invitational.
No. 11 Long Beach State opened its 2013 season at the Triton Invitational with Parks leading the pack with nine goals. The junior stepped up when the 49ers needed her most firing in a game-high four goals against then No. 17 Cal State Northridge as well as a crucial steal with about 35 seconds remaining in the game to seal the 10-8 victory.
The Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. native kicked off the season with a pair of goals in the 8-6 victory over then No. 11 Michigan. The junior also found the back of the cage once vs. No. 7 San Diego State as the 49ers lost in near upset of the Aztecs 7-6 in overtime and wrapped up the tournament with another pair of goals in a 9-7 victory over Big West foe No. 13 UC Santa Barbara.
This is Parks' first time earning Big West Player of the Week honors.
