Beach Water Polo Drops OT Match To UCI, Finishes Fourth In Big West Tournament
LBSU took fourth place in the Big West Tournament.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
No. 11 Long Beach State women's water polo battled but dropped a thrilling 7-6 loss to No. 7 UC Irvine in second overtime to take fourth place in the Big West Tournament.
The Beach opened the match with a quick goal from sophomore Alexandra Massier on the counter attack in the opening minute of play. Sophomore Emily Garczynski added to it with her first of the match from the perimeter. LBSU blanked the Anteaters in the first period to take a 2-0 lead.
UCI was able to tie the match up at two early in the second quarter, but a 5-meter penalty shot taken by freshman Tori Morrissey got the 49ers back in the lead. Sophomore and LBSU's leading-scorer Virginia Smith netted a post-up backhanded shot to give her team another two-goal boost going into the second half, 4-2.
The Anteaters continued to tie the match again with another two goals in the third quarter, but LBSU found another answer as freshman Annabel Harman put the Beach back ahead by one, 5-4.
Both teams came out strong in the fourth quarter, but UCI's Mary Brooks was able to cash in her third goal of the match to tie the game at five midway through the period. With just 47 second left on the clock, the `Eaters came up with possession, but LBSU senior Alexis Butler was able to get a big save and send the game into overtime.
UCI struck first in the first overtime, but Smith answered right back to send the match into a second overtime. Emily Carlson scored the game-winner for the Anteaters with 27 seconds left on the clock, giving UCI a third place finish in the tournament.
LBSU played a similar match at the end of last season, falling to UCSB in double overtime 10-9.
Long Beach State finished the season strong, fighting their way up from a No. 24 CWPA Top 25 Poll ranking to a No. 11 ranking. All the success started with the start of Big West Conference play, topping UC Davis, Hawai'i, Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara for the top seed in the tournament.
The sophomores proved to be a big force in this season offensively for the Beach with four of them scoring career highs this season. The freshmen have also been a huge factor for the Beach offensively, especially Tori Morrissey and Annabel Harman scoring over 30 goals each. The seniors held the team together, each providing a leading role in and out of the pool to give this team a big ending to an incredible season.
