49ers fall in Big West Championships to No. 10 UC Irvine

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Krizia Cerda and Melissa Matheson both scored a pair of goals, but No. 16 Long Beach State's run through the Big West Tournament ended in an 11-5 loss to No. 10 UC Irvine in the championship game. Long Beach State fell behind early, as the Anteaters took a 2-0 lead in just over a minute, and while the 49ers cut the lead to one at 2-1 with a goal from Coriann Snyder, a goal from Cortney Collyer, her second of the period gave UCI a 3-1. The Anteaters moved out to a 6-1 lead before Krizia Cerda converted a penalty shot just before the end of the half, bringing the score to 6-2 at the break. UC Irvine scored five goals to the 49ers three in the second half as the Long Beach State, seeded sixth in the tournament, ultimately fell 11-5 to the regular-season champions. Despite the loss, Long Beach State's runner-up finish is the best finish in for the 49ers in the three seasons of the Big West Tournament. The 49ers close the season with a 14-17 overall record.
