Water Polo Falls To Hawaii In Third Place Match

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The 2014 season came to a close on Sunday as the Long Beach State women’s water polo team fell 6-4 to Hawai’i in the third place match of the Big West Tournament. The 49ers (19-12) scored three goals in the third quarter to tie the match at the half.

Hawaii climbed on top with two goals in the first quarter while holding the Beach scoreless. However, momentum changed in the second quarter as the Beach went off for three goals to tie up the match at 3-3.

The Wahine scored first in the quarter to go up 3-0 on Mirella Coutinho’s goal. Justine Morgan responded for LBSU with 4:29 to go in the half. It took just 36 seconds for the Beach to strike again as Chelsea Parks found the net to make it a one-goal match. Just over one minute later, Hillary Veselik struck to tie the match up at 3-3 going into halftime.

The momentum switched back in the third as the Wahine put up two more goals while holding LBSU scoreless. They took the 5-3 lead into the final quarter and scored once more to go up 6-3. Coriann Snyder scored with just over three minutes to go in the match to cut the lead down to two goals, but Hawai’i withstood LBSU’s furious comeback attempt to capture third place in the tournament.

Kelly Ringel made five saves in the first quarter to keep the Beach in it. All 10 goals in the match were scored by a different player.

Long Beach State finishes the 2014 season with an overall record of 19-12. For the second year in a row, the 49ers played in the third place match of the Big West Tournament to wrap up the season.
