Beach Water Polo Takes Sixth In Big West Tournament

Honolulu, Hawai'i- Long Beach State lost to UC Santa Barbara in overtime in the fifth place match in the Big West Tournament 10-9. Junior Christina Kotsia led the Beach with three goals and freshman goalkeeper Marriette Harris had eight saves.

In the first quarter, freshman Alexandra Massier scored the first goal on a six versus five man up power play. The Gauchos reacted with a goal to tie the match 1-1 at the end of the quarter. In the second quarter, Kotsia scored her first goal from the perimeter and junior Emily Matheson scored a beautiful back hand shot from the center position. UCSB scored two more goals and ended the quarter with a tie 3-3.

In the third quarter, senior captain Justine Morgan scored on a power play and Kotsia scored her second goal from the perimeter to lead the Beach 5-4 at the end of the quarter. In the fourth quarter, Kotsia and freshman Virginia Smith each scored from a power play, but UCSB scored two more goals to tie the match 7-7.

In the first overtime period, junior Kayla Robert scored the first goal from the center position. UCSB answered back with two goals, then Smith scored at the buzzer with a lob off the perimeter to tie the match 9-9. In the second over time, the Gauchos scored once more to win the match 10-9.
