April 26, 2014
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State grabbed the early lead in search of an upset but fell 5-2 to No. 1 seed UC Irvine in the Big West semifinals on Saturday. Defense dominated for most of the match as the well-played match was close until the end and only two goals were scored in the first half.
The Beach (19-11) struck first with the only goal in the opening quarter. Jessica Brooks tallied the goal to put the Beach out in front. However, UC Irvine responded in the second when Emily Carlson found the back of the net with 1:41 to go in the half.
The Beach was held scoreless in the second and held to a single goal in the third. Hannah Croghan gave the Anteaters their first lead of the afternoon when she scored less than a minute into the third. Hillary Veselik capitalized on a 6-on-5 opportunity for the Beach with the game-tying goal. Less than 20 seconds later UCI responded with another goals and would hold a lead the rest of the way.
Long Beach State had an opportunity to tie the match at 3-3 but Coriann Snyder’s five-meter shot went off the post. UCI put up two more goals late in the match to add to their lead.
Kelly Ringel made five saves in goal for the Beach while Jillian Yocum made three for UCI. Both defenses also stopped multiple shots from getting all the way through with a number of shot blocks.
Long Beach State will play in the third-place match tomorrow at 12:15 p.m. against No. 3 seed Hawai’i.
