LONG BEACH - Bethany Quertermous recorded a hat trick and Brooke Millar was a stalwart in net with nine saves as Pacific edged UC Santa Barbara 7-5 for third place in the Big West Women's Water Polo Tournament Sunday.
The Tigers finished the season at 23-10, the 23 wins a school record. The Gauchos completed the 2010 campaign at 18-12.
UCSB got out in front 1-0 on a goal by Shelby Haroldson less than two minutes into the game. But Quertermous scored twice in a span of 41 seconds to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage.
Kathryn Nelson, who led the Gauchos with two goals, tied the scoreline at 2-2 with a goal at the 4:50 mark to complete the first quarter scoring.
UCSB regained the lead at 3-2 on a power play goal by Claire Buchanan at 4:38 in the second quarter. Pacific responded with a power play goal of its own, getting one from freshman Jasmine Myles at the 3:10 mark. The two teams went into halftime knotted at 3-3.
The Pacific defense kicked into high gear, holding the Gauchos scoreless for 15 straight minutes. After Buchanan's second period goal, UCSB did not score again until Christie Clark's lob shot went over Millar's head at 5:36 in the fourth.
By that point, Pacific scored twice in the third period and once in the fourth to establish a 6-3 advantage. Bridget Geck and Dara Tawarahara converted power play attempts in the third quarter, and Quertermous slid a shot to the lower right corner for the 6-3 lead early on in the fourth period.
UCSB attempted a comeback and pulled to within 6-5 on goals by Clark and Nelson within a minute of each other. But the Tiger defense stiffened again and held the Gauchos scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Myles capped off the scoring with her second goal of the game with 3:12 left.
