UC Irvine Reaches Championship Match For Second Straight Year
April 24, 2010
LONG BEACH - Cortney Collyer, Caitlin Haskell and Jessy Cardey scored two goals each to lead UC Irvine in a 10-7 victory over Pacific in the semifinals of the Big West Women's Water Polo Championship Saturday at Long Beach State's Campus Pool.
UC Irvine limited Pacific's top two offensive threats - Jasmine Myles and Dara Tawarahara - to just two goals in the contest. The Tiger duo came into the game ranked No. 1 and No. 3 in Big West scoring, respectively.
Morgan Vickers made seven saves in the Anteater net, while Tiger counterpart Brooke Millar turned away nine UCI shots.
The Anteaters went into the halftime break up 5-3 as junior Caitlin Haskell had two first half goals. Haskell, who had a hat trick against UC Davis Friday, has scored five goals in the tournament so far.
Pacific trailed 7-4 in the third quarter but whittled the deficit down to two as Melissa Loper scored with 13 seconds left on the clock. UC Irvine increased the lead back to three, 8-5, as Katie Croghan registered a goal just 19 seconds into the fourth period.
Bridget Geck, who led the Tigers with three goals, then went to work with a pair of goals to twice cut the Anteater lead to two, the last time at 4:20 to go. But the Anteaters sealed the win with Collyer's score at 2:32.
With the win, the Anteaters advance to the Big West Tournament championship game for the second year in a row. UCI (14-14) will face either No. 2 seed Cal State Northridge or No. 3 seed UC Santa Barbara at 3:45 p.m. on Sunday.
Pacific (22-10) plays the loser of the CSUN-UCSB contest at 2:00 p.m. Sunday for third place.
