UC Irvine Notches 9-3 Win Versus UC Davis
April 23, 2010
LONG BEACH - Caitlin Haskell led a trio of UC Irvine players with multiple goals in a 9-3 Anteater victory over UC Davis in the first round of the Big West Women's Water Polo Tournament Friday at Long Beach State's Campus Pool.
The fourth-seeded Anteaters advance to play top-seeded Pacific in one semifinal at 4:00 p.m. Saturday.
Morgan Vickers made nine saves for the Anteaters, as did her counterpart, UCD goalie Casey Hines. In addition to Haskell's three goals, seniors Kat Plummer and Erin Kiene added two apiece. The Aggies had goals from Carey Faber, Jessica Dunn and Carmen Eggert.
UC Davis, the No. 5 seed, got out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Dunn in the first period. However, that was the last lead the Aggies would own as UCI responded with three consecutive goals by Jessy Cardey, Kiene and Katie Croghan to grab a 3-1 advantage after one quarter.
The Aggies cut the deficit in half with an early second period goal by Faber, but Plummer converted a 6 on 5 situation with her first goal of the afternoon to stake UCI to a 4-2 lead. Plummer scored her second consecutive goal with just 29 seconds left to give the Anteaters a 5-2 halftime edge.
UCI kept the pressure going in the second half. Haskell recorded a hat trick in the second half alone, tallying her first one with 6:33 to go in the third quarter. UC Davis responded with a goal by Eggert to trim the Anteater advantage to 6-3, but that was as close as the Aggies would get.
Two fourth quarter goals by Haskell closed out the scoring as UCI improved to 13-14 on the year. UC Davis, which fell to 15-17, plays the loser of the upcoming UC Santa Barbara-Long Beach State matchup at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday in the fifth place game.
