IRVINE, Calif. -

No. 13 Long Beach State women’s water polo went the distance but came up one goal short, dropping their first Big West Conference loss to No. 8 UC Irvine, 11-10. Freshman Tori Morrissey led the Beach with three goals.

A four-goal second period for UCI (18-10, 3-2) made the difference as LBSU tried to battle back, but dropped the Black and Blue rivalry match by just one goal.

The match was close to start as both teams scored three goals in the first quarter. Morrissey grabbed two and sophomore Daniela Screnci added the other for the Beach. UCI’s Gabby Pierandozzi score a pair for the Anteaters and Mary Brooks scored the other.

UCI took a two-goal lead in the second that extended through into the start of the fourth period. Morrissey and sophomore Virginia Smith scored the two in the second period for LBSU as the Anteaters went on to score four. Each team had two goals in the third – senior Emily Matheson backhanded a goal inside, and sophomore Emily Garczynski sunk a perimeter shot. UCI led 9-7 going into the final quarter.

The Anteaters scored the first goal early in the quarter, but LBSU answered with two to cut the deficit to one, 10-9. Senior Jessica Brooks grabbed the first goal on a counter attack, and Garczynski shot in the second on a 5-meter penalty shot with just under three minutes to go.

UCI was able to score another goal with 57 seconds left, courtesy of Mary Brooks who had a game-leading 5 goals in the match. LBSU still had a chance, drawing a 5-meter penalty shot that Garczynski once again scored with 30 seconds left, but it wasn’t enough for a comeback.

LBSU now falls to (16-10, 3-1 Big West), which is tied for the first seed with No. 7 UC Santa Barbara (15-11, 3-1). UCI is now tied with Hawai’i (18-7, 3-2) for the second seed.
