LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's water polo team earned its first Big West victory of the season as it defeated Pacific, 9-6, Saturday afternoon at the 49er Campus Pool.
LBSU improved to 11-13 overall and 1-2 in Big West action, while the Tigers dropped to 9-14, 0-2 Big West.
Kelly Ringel anchored a solid 49er defense with 15 saves.
Pacific struck first as it scored on the opening possession. The Tigers then went up 2-0 in the fourth minute before Snyder found the back of the net in a 6-on-5 situation with 41 seconds left to cut the deficit in half. Ringel kept LBSU close in the first quarter with five saves.
In the second period, Pacific took a 3-1 advantage before Long Beach State scored four unanswered goals. Parks started the run with a skip shot at the 6:20 mark. Just over one minute later, McKeon's shot found the inside of the far post and then another goal from Parks gave the 49ers their first lead of the day. Lantz then made it 5-3 with a goal at the buzzer.
Long Beach State pulled ahead by four in the third frame after Matheson converted a penalty shot and Parks completed her hat trick with 6:29 to go. The Tigers eventually ended a 12-minute scoring drought at the 2:47 mark to make it 7-4 at the end of the period.
The two teams traded goals in the fourth quarter as the 49ers came away with the 9-6 victory. Snyder found the back of the net twice, including a deep perimeter shot that was perfectly placed to the lower right corner.
Kelsey Carter paced Pacific with two goals, while Michele Relton finished with 11 saves.
