March 31, 2012
Santa Barbara, Calif. - Kelly Ringel made 13 saves for Long Beach State, but the Gauchos earned the sudden victory in the fifth overtime as UC Santa Barbara defeated Long Beach State 4-3.
Long Beach State got on the board first, as Justine Morgan gave the 49ers a 1-0 lead after the first quarter. UC Santa Barbara answered with three goals over the next two periods, as the fourth quarter began with the 49ers trailing by two.
Chelsea Parks scored to bring the 49ers to within one, and Morgan scored her second goal of the game to tie the score a 3-3 with 3:55 remaining.
That would be the last goal either team would score for an extended period, as the overtime periods saw both teams continue with strong defense. Then, moving to sudden death, Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara went two more periods before Shelby Haroldson ended the game with a goal in the ninth period of play.
The 49ers continue their road trip on Sunday with a Noon match against No. 17 Cal State Northridge.
