Women's Water Polo Upsets No. 5 UC Davis In Big West Conference Opener

Senior Alexis Butler had a big game against No. 5 UC Davis, grabbing nine saves in the win.

No. 21 Long Beach State women's water polo pulled the upset over No. 5 UC Davis 8-4, extending their win streak to seven. Senior Alexis Butler tallied nine saves, and sophomore Emily Garczynski scored a pair of goals in the win.

LBSU took control early, jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the first period. Sophomore Alexandra Massier grabbed the first goal of the match at the 3:46 mark. Freshman Tori Morrissey scored the next goal from the perimeter to go up 2-0. The Beach drew an exclusion on Davis junior Carla Tocchini, and capitalized with a goal from senior Emily Matheson. Senior Leigh Auth had a shot from the perimeter go in, to give the Beach their 4-0 lead.

UCD junior Bryn Lutz scored the first goal for the Aggies on the man advantage with five seconds left in the first period, but trailed going into the second 4-1.

Sophomore Emily Garczynski had a multi-scoring game, both goals coming on the 6-on-5 man advantage. Her first goal was with a minute off the clock in the second period after LBSU drew the exclusion on UCD's Hailey Wright.

Aggie sophomore Sammy Preston scored on the counter to cut the Davis deficit to 5-2 with just over two minutes to go in the second. But Daniela Screnci shot one in from the perimeter to give LBSU a four-goal cushion going into the second half.

Butler held the Aggies to just two goals in the first half, registering three saves - all in the first period. She continued her performance going into the third, blanking UCD with another three saves.

Garczynski scored the only goal of the third with the man advantage, going up 7-2 going into the fourth period.

Senior captain Jessica Brooks scored a perimeter goal for the Beach to give her team the 8-2 lead nearing the end of the match. UCD was able to get their first goal of the second half off an exclusion from LBSU's Massier midway through the period. Senior Allyson Hansen scored the exclusion goal for the Aggies. Tocchini scored the other goal for UCD with a perimeter shot to end the match.

Butler had six saves in the second half, three in each period. UCD goalie Haley Cameron had five saves in the first half, but just one in the second for six total saves in the matach.

LBSU improves to 12-7 in the season and 1-0 in Big West Conference play. UCD is 14-9 overall and 0-1 Big West.

LBSU has another test in No. 8 California on Sunday, Mar. 27 in Berkeley, Calif. The match is set for a 2 p.m. sprint.
