49ers Get Back in the Win Column After a Pair of Victories Saturday

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Long Beach State women's water polo team wrapped up its trip down in San Diego Saturday with a pair of non-conference victories over Brown and Redlands to get back on the win column. Christina Kotsia led the 49ers with four goals on Saturday while Coriann Snyder chipped in with three.
Game 1: #9 Long Beach State 10 - Brown 2
Long Beach State used a 6-1 run in the second half behind Kotsia's hat-trick to lead the 49ers (19-4, 0-2 Big West) past Brown 10-2 Saturday morning at the Aztec Aquaplex. Rachel Cretcher also chipped in with a pair of goals with Kelly Ringel grabbing 11 saves.
Both offenses started off a little stagnant but the 49ers would get things going after Chelsea Parks put one past Brown's Sarah Shin at 3:52. Julie Lantz pushed the lead to two on a pass from Kat Elward in set but the Bears (7-10, 2-2 CWPA) would get one back with 38 seconds remaining to end the quarter 2-1 in LBSU's favor.
Kotsia fired one in to the back of the cage right as play resumed on the 6-on-5 advantage to extend the 49er lead to 3-1 at 6:47. The freshman would score once more for LBSU in the quarter as Long Beach State took a 4-1 into the break.
The 49er bench started the second half tacking on two more goals for The Beach behind Cretcher's two goals.
Brown's Madison Pepper found the back of the cage with 22 seconds left in the quarter for her second of the day as LBSU took a 6-2 lead into the final period.
Kotsia picked up her hat-trick at 6:53 as Snyder followed up with a goal of her own a couple possessions later to make it 8-2 49ers.
Game 2: #9 Long Beach State 11 - Redlands 2
The women's water polo team used a 7-0 lead in the first half to route Redlands 11-2 Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Aquaplex to wrap up the two-day trip in San Diego, Calif. Four players scored multiple goals for the 49ers while Alexis Butler collected nine saves in the cage. Mackenzie Robinson relieved Butler of her duties in the fourth grabbing two saves.
The 49ers started things off with a 3-0 run capped off by Elward's cross-cage shot off after picking up Leigh Auth's rebound.
Long Beach State would continue to score at will in the second frame tacking on four more goals ending with Auth's goal at 1:06 to take the 7-0 lead into the break.
Melissa Matheson extended the lead to eight before the Bulldog's Annie Kinney's shot skipped past Butler to end a 17 minute scoring drought. LBSU put up two more on the board before Kinney found the back of the cage just as time expired on the clock for the 10-2 49er lead heading into the final period.
Hillary Veselik recorded her second goal of the day at 3:54 to make it 11-2 for the lone goal for either side in the fourth.
Long Beach State heads north next week for a pair of conference matches March 29-30. The 49ers open up with Pacific at 7 p.m. at the Chris Kjeldsen Pool Complex in Stockton, Calif. and conclude their northern California trip against UC Davis at the Schaal Aquatics Center for a 3 p.m. drop.
