Long Beach, Calif. -

No. 21 Long Beach State women’s water polo cruised to a 7-1 win over Bucknell, extending their win streak to four. Senior Alexis Butler had a season-high 14 saves, and sophomore Virginia Smith led with three goals in the match.

After more than five scoreless minutes to start, sophomore Virginia Smith struck first for the Beach with a goal on the 6-on-5 man advantage.

Bucknell had an opportunity to even the score with under a minute left to play, when LBSU’s Bridget Reynolds was excluded. The Bison called a timeout, but Butler came out with the save to keep the 49ers in the lead going into the second period.

The second saw more action as the Beach scored three more goals to extend their lead to 4-0 at the end of the first half.

Sophomore Alexandra Massier scored her first goal and the second Beach goal off an exclusion with a shot from the center. Emily Garczynski scored the third man-advantage goal for LBSU with a perimeter shot to give the Beach a 3-0 lead with more than six minutes to go.

With just over a minute left, Bucknell had a great chance to get on the board, but the shot hit the post and went left for the Bison.

On the next possession, LBSU looked like they were about to turn the ball over with a pass on the inside to Massier, but the sophomore defender was able to regain possession and pass it to a cutting Karley Kraft who shoots it in for the Beach.

Butler was a wall for LBSU, making big stops when Bucknell had the man advantage. She had eight saves at the end of the half, four in the second.

Going into the third period, Butler held Bucknell scoreless for the first five minutes. Sophomore Colleen Barron gave the Bison their first goal of the night with a shot inside at the 2:32 mark.

Less than 15 seconds passed and Smith regained their four-goal lead with a shot from the perimeter. With 30 seconds to go, Bucknell had another opportunity to cut into LBSU’s lead as the Beach was called on another exclusion, but Butler swatted the ball away to keep LBSU in the lead, 5-1, going into the final period.

The Beach was given the man advantage early in the fourth, and Smith was able to connect for her third goal of the match at the 6:12 mark, giving LBSU a 6-1 lead.

Bucknell had some opportunities with the man advantage, but weren’t able find the back of the net. At the 2:30 mark, LBSU was again called on an exclusion, but Bucknell’s shot hit the top of the crossbar and did not go in. The Beach maintained their 6-1 lead until just over the one-minute mark when junior Daniela Screnci scored a goal from the perimeter, securing the win.
