Beach Water Polo Defeats Caltech and Marist
Long Beach State beats Caltech 18-3 and Marist 8-7.
Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach Water Polo win both home games at the Ken Lindgren Aquatic Center. The Beach defeated the Caltech Beavers 18-3 and Marist 8-7. Freshmen Savannah Vukelich and Emily Garcynski each scored 6 goals against Caltech and junior Christina Kotsia scored 5 goals against Marist.
In the first quarter against the Beavers, Vukelich opened the match by scoring the first goal within thirty seconds. Freshmen Shebly Rascon and Garcynski, and sophomore Jackie Stanger each scored one goal, while freshman Paulina Bernd scored three goals on counter attacks to end the quarter at 7-1.
In the second quarter, Garcynski and Vukelich each scored one goal. Freshman Marina Ranj and Bridget Reynolds also scored one goal each. Sophomore Ashlee Coleman scored 2 goals to end the quarter with a lead of 13-3.
In the third quarter, Stanger scored her second goal on a six versus five man-up power play to keep the Beach's lead at 14-3. In the fourth quarter, goal keeper junior Warner Rich held a shut out for the third and fourth quarters and did not let any goals go past her. Vukelich and Garcynski each scored two more goals to end the match with a win at 18-3.

In the second match against Marist, Kotsia scored the first goal with a 5 meter penalty shot. Marist answered back with their first goal, and then Kotsia threw in her second goal from a power play. Marist scored two more goals to end the quarter at 2-3.
In the second quarter, Marist scored their fourth to put the Red Foxes at 2-4. Freshman Virginia Smith threw in her first goal on a power play to bring the Beach at 3-4 at the end of the quarter.
In the third quarter, senior Rachel Cretcher threw in a goal on a power play. Then Kotsia scored two more goals in from the perimeter to tie the score for the Beach at 6-6.
During the final quarter, Marist scored once more, but senior Justine Morgan scored from the perimeter to tie the score at 7-7. Kotsia scored once more to seal the win for the Beach at 8-7 with her fifth goal.
Long Beach State will play again on Sunday March 15 against No. 6 Arizona State at 12 p.m. at the Ken Lindgren Aquatic Center.
