49ers Defeat Bucknell in Home Opener

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The No. 9 Long Beach State women's water polo team extended its winning streak to 14 games after sinking Bucknell 10-3 at the Campus Pool Tuesday night. LBSU was led by Chelsea Parks with four while Christina Kotsia chipped in with a pair of goals. Kelly Ringel finished the night with seven saves.
The 49ers (17-2) started the first period off with a 4-0 run lasting 6:26 seconds before Julianne Valdes fired one in past Ringel on a penalty shot to put BU on the board. Kotsia responded with a rocket from the outside with just 31 seconds left in the first period to put LBSU up 5-1.
Both teams exchanged a pair of goals in the second frame making it 7-3 Long Beach State heading into the half as the Bisons (3-9, 1-2 CWPA) finished out the period with a 2-0 run capped off by Samantha Deana's penalty goal.
It was all Long Beach State in the second half as the 49ers' defense held Bucknell scoreless for the entire second half.
Parks found the back of the cage two more times in the third period for her team-leading four goals while Leigh Auth scored LBSU's lone goal in the fourth.
Rena Heim finished with nine saves in the cage for BU.
The 49ers return to action Friday, March 15, at the Campus Pool for its Big West Conference opener against No. 8 Hawai'i. Ball is set to drop at 3 p.m.
