49er water polo wins a pair in day two of the Roadrunner Invitational

Bakersfield, Calif. - Melissa Matheson and Chelsea Parks each scored five goals on Sunday, as No. 19 Long Beach State picked up a pair of wins at the Roadrunner Invitational. The 49ers started the day with a 9-5 win over Bucknell, and then routed Wagner 16-6. Long Beach State opened the day with its first win in the tournament in convincing fashion. Playing Bucknell, Long Beach State scored the first three goals of the game, and held a 4-1 lead after the first quarter. The 49ers continued to press, outscoring the Bison 3-1 in the second quarter to take a 7-2 lead into the second half. Chelsea Parks scored her second goal of the game for the only goal in the third period, and Long Beach State held that lead through the rest of the game in a 9-5 victory over the Bison. Parks and Melissa Matheson each had two goals for LBSU, and six different 49ers scored. Against Wagner, the 49ers again jumped out to a huge lead on the way to a win. Justine Morgan and Parks both scored two goals in the first quarter, and Matheson had three in the first half as Long Beach State opened up a 10-3 lead at halftime. Julie Lantz had three second half goals, and Hilary Veselik scored her first goal of 2012 in the closing moments. Long Beach State returns to the Campus Pool next weekend, as the 49ers will get a rematch against Bucknell before hosting Harvard.
