49ers nearly pull off upset of No. 12 Indiana, but lose a pair of matches at the Roadrunner Invitational

Bakersfield, Calif. - Long Beach State nearly pulled off a big upset to start Saturday at the Roadrunner Invitational, but lost by a goal to No. 12 Indiana and then lost to hosts Cal State Bakersfield on the first day of the tournament.
Long Beach State stormed out to a big lead against Indiana, catching the Hoosiers by surprise. Indiana outscored the 49ers 2-1 in the first period, but Long Beach State scored four unanswered goals in the second period to take a 5-2 lead into halftime. The Hoosiers were able to even the match with three goals in the third period, though, and closed out the 49ers with another 2-1 period in the fourth quarter to hold off Long Beach State.
In the second game, Long Beach State fell behind by a goal in the first half, trailing 4-3, and had the second half go down as a carbon copy, falling 8-6 to the host Roadrunners.
The 49ers will play two more matches tomorrow in Bakersfield, facing Bucknell and Wagner.
