Women's Water Polo Sweeps No. 15 LMU And George Washington

Senior Alexis Butler had 19 saves during the Wolverine Invite.

No. 21 Long Beach State women’s water polo ended the Wolverine Invite with a pair of big wins over George Washington, 14-4, and No. 15 Loyola Marymount, 8-6.

Sophomore Alexandra Massier finished the weekend with 7 total goals to lead the team, scoring three goals today.

Senior Alexis Butler had a total of 19 saves over the weekend, grabbing 16 of them against GW and LMU (eight saves each match). After this weekend, Butler tallied 76 total saves so far this season, matching her total number of saves from last season.

LBSU started off the day with a big win against George Washington., scoring nine of the 14 goals in the first half.

The Beach scored the first two goals, and eventually went up two going into the second quarter, 4-2. Massier and freshman Tori Morrissey scored on the 6-on-5 man advantage while Daniela Screnci added one on the counter attack. Annabel Harman also scored with a perimeter shot.

LBSU added five more goals in the second quarter and blanked the Colonials with Butler in front of the net for the Beach. Massier, Screnci, Taylor Julson, Virginia Smith and Leigh Auth all scored in the second.

Screnci finished off the match with a hat trick with her third goal coming on the counter in the third quarter. Senior Emily Matheson added a goal from the center, and freshman Karley Kraft shot one in from the perimeter.

Senior Auth added her second goal of the match with a perimeter shot, and junior Jackie Stanger netted her first goal of the season with a 5-meter penalty shot.

LBSU went on to upset No. 15 LMU in the last match of the weekend. The Beach led the whole way, scoring three goals in the first and holding LMU to just one goal.

All three goals came on the man advantage for the Beach. Garczynski got things started a minute in, Morrissey netted hers midway, and Auth scored with a minute left.

No goals were scored in the second quarter as LBSU rode their two-goal lead into the second half.

The Beach scored four more goals in the third. Kraft and Morrissey scored from the perimeter while Smith and Massier scored on the counter. LMU scored a pair of goals but trailed 7-4 going into the fourth.

The Lions were able to score another pair in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough as Smith netted her second of the match off a 5-meter penalty.

UP NEXT
After this weekend, the Beach will take another week off before returning home to face Bucknell on Thursday, Mar. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
