Beach Water Polo Falls To No. 5 Michigan, Trumps Bucknell To Start Wolverine Invite

Sophomore Alexandra Massier scored a hat trick against No. 5 Michigan.

No. 21 Long Beach State women’s water polo dropped the first match to No. 5 Michigan, 15-8, but bounced back with a strong second half for a win over Bucknell, 8-6. Alexandra Massier and Annabel Harman finished the day with four goals each.

LBSU faced the Wolverines to start off the day. Michigan led throughout the match, getting an early jump in the first quarter after scoring five to LBSU’s two goals. Senior Emily Matheson and Massier netted the two for the Beach.

Senior Leigh Auth scored the only goal in the second for LBSU off a 6-on-5 man advantage. The Wolverines had another five goals to go up 10-3 going into the second half.

Both teams scored three goals apiece to start the third. Three different 49ers contributed goals in the quarter. Massier grabbed her second of the match while freshman Annabel Harman and sophomore Virginia Smith scored their first.

Senior Alexis Butler had a save in the quarter, tallying two saves in the match. Sophomore Marriette Harris replaced Butler in the fourth quarter and grabbed four saves.

Luiza Moraes picked up her second goal of the season midway through the fourth quarter as Massier completed her hat trick with 11 seconds to spare, scoring her third goal on the man advantage.

In the second match of the day, LBSU had a slow start against Bucknell trailing in the first half by two goals, but the Beach powered through, scoring six goals to upend Bucknell by two.

Massier continued her scoring into the second game of the day, netting the only goal for LBSU in the first quarter. Bucknell scored two in the first to go up by one, 2-1.

The Bison scored another pair in the second to go up 4-2 going into the second half. Sophomore Emily Garczynski grabbed her first goal of the match in the second quarter.

LBSU had a strong second half that included a five-goal third quarter to take the lead and blanking the Bison in the fourth to secure the win.

Smith grabbed two goals in the third while Garczynski added her second goal of the match. Harman came in with two perimeter goals to give the Beach the lead, 7-6, going into the fourth quarter.

LBSU scored the lone goal in the fourth as Harman completed her hat trick with her third perimeter goal.

UP NEXT
After this weekend, the Beach will take another week off before returning home to face Bucknell on Thursday, Mar. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
