Women's Water Polo rebounds with 10-3 win over Santa Clara

Santa Clara, Calif. - Long Beach State scored six goals in the second quarter, including two of Melissa Matheson's game high three, as the 49ers opened up a 7-1 first half lead on the way to a 10-3 rout of Santa Clara on the road on Sunday.
Matheson scored the only goal in a low-scoring first period on the road at Santa Clara, finding the net with 4:23 remaining, but Long Beach State pulled away from the Broncos in a huge second quarter. After finding Matheson in the team's first two possessions in the second, a goal by Chelsea Parks would give the 49ers a 4-0 lead before the Broncos broke onto the scoreboard with a goal from Laura Espinosa. Heather McKeon answered back with a goal the next trip down the pool for Long Beach State however, and the 49ers took a 7-1 lead into the second half.
Playing keep away most of the rest of the way, Long Beach State and Santa Clara each scored one goal in the third period, before two late goals from Julie Lantz and Nicole Van DerHoof put Long Beach State into double-digits for just the second time in 2012.
Kelly Ringel made eight saves for Long Beach State, giving her over 100 on the season for the 49ers.
Long Beach State will play four matches next week at the Bakersfield Invitational before returning to the Campus Pool to face Bucknell and Harvard.
