49ers defeat No. 10 UC Irvine in overtime 6-5
Feb. 27, 2011
Irvine, Calif. - Long Beach State stifled a UC Irvine rally, scoring two goals to the Anteaters' one in overtime to beat the host 6-5 in the 49ers' third game at the tournament. The 49ers close out the tournament by facing San Jose State.
Goaltender Kristen Stragier had an outstanding game for Long Beach State, making 14 saves to hold the Anteaters to just four goals in regulation. Her effort, along with the defense, helped the 49ers beat UCI for the first time since 2006.
The 49ers opened an early lead, scoring a pair of goals in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. That would last until halftime, as Long Beach State held the Anteaters scoreless through the entire first half.
Another two-goal quarter from Long Beach State put the 49ers in the lead 4-1 after the third, but UC Irvine scored three goals in the fourth period to force the overtime periods.
The 49ers close out their time at the UC Irvine Invitational later Sunday afternoon, playing No. 11 San Jose State at 1:30 p.m.
