Women's Water Polo Goes Undefeated at Fluid Four

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 10 women's water polo team rolled past Washington & Jefferson College 19-3 at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center to complete its undefeated run at the Fluid Four Sunday afternoon. Freshman Leigh Auth led the 49ers (8-2) with eight goals over the two-day tournament.
The win marks the first time the 49ers finished a tournament undefeated since hosting the LBSU Classic in 2008 going 3-0.
The 16 point differential against W&J tied the school record for largest margin of victory from 2000 when LBSU defeated Cal State San Bernardino 17-1.
Game 1: #10 Long Beach State 14 - Dollard des Ormeaux 11 (Exhibition)
The 49ers opened the second day of the Fluid Four with an exhibition victory over Dollard des Ormeaux 14-11 early Sunday morning. Five separate players recorded multiple goals while junior Kelly Ringel recorded 9 saves.
DDO kept the match close at 4-3 after one period of play but Long Beach State held the club team to just one goal in the second frame for the 7-4 lead going into the break.
LBSU had its hands full in the third period as Dollard des Ormeaux went on a 6-2 run for the 10-9 lead heading into the final period.
The 49ers would not back down and responded with a 5-1 run in the fourth frame to seal the 14-11 victory.
Game 2: #10 Long Beach State 19 - Washington & Jefferson 3
The women's water polo team concluded the Fluid Four with a dominating win over Washington & Jefferson 19-3 Sunday afternoon behind the shooting of Auth. Freshmen Alexis Butler got her second start in the cage and collected 11 saves.
The 49ers came out of the gate firing on all cylinders and held the Presidents (0-3) scoreless for the 4-0 lead after the first quarter.
Long Beach State continued to dominate as it took a commanding 9-1 lead at the half as freshman Emily Matheson officially made it into the books with her first collegiate goal in the second period.
LBSU kept rolling in the second half as Rachel Cretcher found the back of the cage twice along with Kat Elward recording her first goal of 2013. Auth also fired in her third and fourth goals of the afternoon to record her first-career hat-trick. Julie Lantz chipped in with another goal as the 49ers wrapped up a 6-1 run in the third.
With a 15-2 lead heading into the final period, Matheson pounded the 2-meter zone for three goals to wrap up the day with four. Auth rounded the scoring out for LBSU in the fourth to finish with a career-high five goals en route to the 19-3 49er victory.
Long Beach State will continue tournament play in the Posada Royale next weekend, March 2-3, hosted by Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Ball drops at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning as the 49ers take on Azusa Pacific to start.
