Women's Water Polo Splits a Pair of Games at the Lancer Invitational

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The No. 11 women's water polo team concluded its first day of the Lancer Invitational splitting a pair of games. The 49ers (4-2) dropped their opening match vs. No. 2 USC 9-1 and turned it around for the 8-3 victory over Cal Baptist Friday evening. Christina Kotsia led all scorers with three while Kelly Ringel recorded 25 saves. Game 1: #2 USC 9 - #11 Long Beach State 1 The 49ers dropped a 9-1 decision to No. 2 USC in the Lancer Invitational opener in Riverside, Calif. Friday afternoon. Freshman Kayla Robert scored the 49ers lone goal while Ringel recorded a season-high 15 saves. Long Beach State was held scoreless until the 3:15 mark in the second period when Robert put one past USC's Flora Bolonyai to end Southern California's 5-0 run that lasted for 12:45. The 49ers headed into halftime trailing the Trojans 7-1. Despite holding USC (6-0) to just two goals in the second half, one in each period, the 49ers couldn't contain the Trojans' Monica Vavic as she went for five goals scoring in every frame. Game 2: #11 Long Beach State 8 - Cal Baptist 3 The women's water polo team defeated the host Cal Baptist 8-3 in their night capper to conclude day 1 of the Lancer Invitational 1-1 Friday evening in Riverside, Calif. Kotsia led the 49ers with a hat-trick while Matheson chipped in with two. Ringel collected nine saves in the cage. LBSU took a 2-0 lead into the second period holding CBU scoreless for 9:12 until Samantha Banks found the back of the net to put the Lancers on the board. Robert gave the 49ers the 3-1 lead heading into halftime with a goal at the 4:28 mark. Both teams would exchange a goal mid-way through the third frame until Long Beach State went on 3-0 run lasting 4:45 seconds that went into the fourth period. Kotsia recorded a pair of goals in the final period and completed her hat-trick at the 4:33 mark for the 8-3 victory over Cal Baptist (1-8). The 49ers return to action tomorrow, February 16, at 10:20 a.m. against Occidental at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
