La Jolla, Calif. -

No. 22 Long Beach State women’s water polo dropped a close match to San Diego State 8-7, but put up big numbers to top Marist College 16-9 to finish 11th at the Triton Invitational.

The Beach stayed close the whole match but just couldn’t get over the hump as they fell to No. 18 SDSU.

It was another consistent scoring match from LBSU’s offense with sophomore Alexandria Massier and freshman Tori Morrissey scoring two goals apiece.

Massier was the lone scorer in the first for the 49ers in the first, tying up that match at one going into the second.

The Beach was outscored in the second, 3-1, as Morrissey grabbed the second goal at the 2:31 mark. LBSU went into the second half down a pair, 4-2.

SDSU kept the distance as both teams scored three goals each in the third. Massier netted her second of the game at the 3:05 mark, and classmate Emily Garczynski scored her first of the match just over a minute later to keep the deficit at two, 6-4.

With under a minute to go, senior Jessica Brooks brought her team within one with her goal on the 6-on-5 man advantage. The Aztecs were able to score near the end to keep a two-goal lead over the Beach, 7-5.

LBSU was able to contain the scoring of the SDSU, keeping the Aztecs to just one goal. But the Beach were only able to grab two as they dropped a close one.

Morrissey brought the deficit back to one with her goal at the midway mark of the fourth. The Aztecs were able to score with 1:26 left to go, making the score 8-6 in their favor. Freshman Annabel Harman continued her scoring as she netted one in the end on the man advantage.

With the loss, the Beach were set to play Marist. Harman put on a show scoring five goals in the match. Senior Emily Matheson and sophomore Virginia Smith both followed it up with a hat trick.

The match stayed close early on, but the second half was huge for the Beach as both their defense and offense got going.

Smith got the first goal for the Beach with a perimeter shot to tie up the match at one. Massier followed 30 seconds later to give LBSU the lead.

Marist went on to score three consecutive goals, but Massier grabbed her second goal of the match to cut the deficit to one, 4-3. Matheson drained the buzzer beater on the counter attack to tie the match back up.

Morrissey scored her lone goal of the match at the 5:39 mark of the second to tie the match at five, which continued her scoring streak throughout the season. Harman scored her first of the match at the 4:43 mark to bring LBSU up by one, 6-5.

Harman scored another one at the 1:24 mark to give the Beach a two-point lead. Marist found the back of the net in the final seconds to cut their deficit back to one going into the second half, 7-6.

LBSU held Marist to three goals in the second half as the Beach netted nine. Harman and Matheson combined for five of the nine goals.

Harman grabbed a hat trick in the third quarter alone to complete her five-goal match. Smith also grabbed a goal in the third as the Beach allowed only two Marist goals and went up 11-8 going into the fourth quarter.

Matheson and Smith completed their hat tricks in the fourth as Matheson netted two goals and Smith one. Junior Daniela Screnci and sophomore Bridget Reynolds both added a goal to LBSU’s lead as the 49ers held Marist to just one goal in the fourth.
