No. 14 Long Beach State finishes Triton Invitational with win

San Diego, Calif. - No. 14 Long Beach State lost its first game of the day, falling by one goal to No. 15 Hartwick 8-7, but recovered to finish 2-2 at the Triton Invitational with a 9-4 victory over Cal State East Bay. Sophomore Julia Garyfallou scored three goals in the 49ers win over the Pioneers.
In the 49ers' final game in San Diego, Long Beach State took a 3-0 lead after the first period, and scored two more goals in the second quarter while holding the Pioneers scoreless in the first half. Erica Crain scored three goals for CS East Bay in the second half, but the 49ers maintained their lead over the Pioneers to finish the tournament with a win.
In the first game, Long Beach State was unable to recover from a slow start. Hartwick took a 4-1 lead following the first half, as Chelsea Parks scored the 49ers' lone goal in the first quarter. Long Beach State mounted a rally in the second half, pulling back one goal in the third period before a thrilling fourth quarter. Heather McKeon scored a pair of goals, with her second goal tying the game at 7-7 with 1:18 remaining. Hartwick pulled out the win as Jemma Dendy-Young scored with 32 seconds left as the Hawks held off the charge from Long Beach State.
Long Beach State next plays at home, bringing No. 18 UC San Diego to the Campus Pool on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Noon.
