Women's Water Polo splits two matches in first day at Triton Invitational
Feb. 11, 2012
San Diego, Calif. - Long Beach State women's water polo picked up their first win of the season, but split on the day as the 49ers finished up their first half of matches at the Triton Invitational. The 49ers lost to No. 17 Maryland by a goal 10-9, before answering with a win over Marist 9-6. Junior Melissa Matheson scored six goals for the 49ers on Saturday, and now has 10 for the season. Matheson had a huge game in the first match of the day, but it wasn't enough to stop a fast start from the Terrapins in the 49ers' tournament opener. Maryland's Allison Campbell scored a pair of first period goals as the Terrapins took a 3-1 lead after the opening quarter. Long Beach State played Maryland even in the second period, scoring three goals apiece, and even pulled even at 7-7 on a goal from Heather McKeon with 3:10 remaining in the third period. Maryland scored in the closing seconds of the third period, and held on to that lead for the rest of the way to top the 49ers. Long Beach State pulled away from Marist in the team's second game of the day to earn the 49ers' first win of the season. The 49ers had more balanced scoring in the second game, taking a 4-3 lead into halftime behind a pair of goals from Matheson and a first-period goal from Julia Garyfallou. Marist was able to tie the game at 5-5, but the first of two goals for Chelsea Parks put the 49ers back on top. The 49ers then held Marist scoreless in the fourth while scoring a pair of their own goals to close strong in a 9-6 victory. Long Beach State returns to action at the Triton Invitational Sunday morning at Noon against the winner of Sonoma State and Hartwick.
