Beach Women's Water Polo Sweeps Hartwick And UC San Diego
No. 15 LBSU beat Hartwick 9-3 and No. 12 UC San Diego 8-7 in double overtime and double sudden victory.
San Diego, Calif. - No. 15 Long Beach State Women’s Water Polo opened the second day of the Triton Invitation with two wins. LBSU beat Hartwick 9-3 and went into two three minute overtime periods and two sudden victory periods against No. 12 UC San Diego and won 8-7.
In the first quarter Hartwick took the lead at 0-1. In the second quarter, the Beach stepped up to the plate. Junior Jessica Brooks and freshman Alexandra Massier out swam their opponents and both scored with counter attack goals. Senior Rachel Cretcher also scored from the perimeter to take the lead for the Beach at 3-2.
In the third quarter, Massier scored her second goal from the perimeter and freshman Virginia Smith scored her first goal. Morgan scored a goal from a counter attack and junior Kayla Robert scored on a six versus five man power play. Sophomore goalie Alba Dominguez had a shut out and did not let Hartwick score to keep the lead at 7-2.
Cretcher scored her second goal in the fourth quarter on power play opportunity. Junior Christina Kotsia scored her first goal on a counter attack to end the match against Hartwick with a win at 9-3.

In the second match of the day at the Triton Invitational, No. 15 LBSU beat No. 12 UC San Diego in double overtime and in double sudden victory at 8-7.
In the first quarter, LBSU instantly took the lead with Brooks scoring off a power play and Smith scoring on a counter attack to lead the Tritons 2-1. In the second quarter, LBSU kept fighting with Robert scoring on a power play and ending the quarter at 3-1.
In the third quarter, the UC San Diego scored two more goals. Kotsia seized the opportunity to pass the ball to Brooks off the line-up and Brooks scored to end the quarter at 4-3. In the fourth quarter, Morgan scored two more goals. UC San Diego fought back and tied the score at 6-6, to send the teams into overtime.
In the first overtime, the Tritons scored another goal to end the first over time at 6-7. In the second overtime period, Kotsia came out swinging and scored for the Beach to tie the score at 7-7. The first sudden victory period ended with a tie still at 7-7. In the second sudden victory period, Smith ended the madness with a power play goal and won the match for the Beach at 8-7.
Long Beach State will play again on February 14 at the Bucknell Tournament in Lewisberg, Pennsylvania.
