Women's Water Polo Splits Day One Of Triton Invitational

SAN DIEGO - Long Beach State women’s water polo opened the 2014 Triton Invitational with a 7-5 win over No. 15 UC Davis but fell 7-4 to No. 5 UC Irvine in the second round game of the tournament. Chelsea Parks scored four goals on the day and Coriann Snyder pitched in three.
LBSU 7 – UCD 5
The 11th-ranked Beach fell behind out of the gates but quickly turned things around in a 7-5 win over conference rival UC Davis. Keelia Houston scored first for the Aggies for the early lead but Justine Morgan knotted things at 1-1 for the Beach (4-3).
Parks then scored two of her three goals in the contest in back-to-back fashion for a 3-1 Beach lead. UCD struck again just 18 seconds before the first buzzer to pull back within one. The Aggies once again scored immediately into the next quarter to draw even at 3-3. Parks scored again for the 49ers to give LBSU a 4-3 lead at the half.
A Kayla Robert goal in the first minute out of the half boosted the Beach lead to two but Hannah Curran answered for the Aggies. Christina Kotsia scored her first goal of the season later in the third quarter to give LBSU a 6-4 lead heading into the final frame.
Katrina Husted came through for the Aggies in the fourth as she found the net less than two minutes in. With time winding down, The Beach went into a man-up situation and Snyder cashed in the opportunity with her only goal of the game.
Long Beach State was able to keep UCD off the board over the final two minutes and came away with the opening round win.

LBSU 4 – UCI 7
The Anteaters took an early lead and never looked back in a 7-4 win over LBSU in both teams second game of the day. UC Irvine’s Hillary Estrada scored 17 seconds into the contest for the only goal of the first quarter.
The Anteaters again scored early in the second quarter but Parks found the net later in the quarter and Long Beach State was down just 2-1. Just before halftime, Jessy Cardey scored her first of two goals in the game and UCI took a 3-1 lead into the half.
Three quick goals out of the break gave UCI a comfortable 6-1 at the midpoint of the third quarter. Snyder would score in the quarter and again in the fourth but UCI scored once more for the final tally. Kotsia also scored in the fourth quarter for her only goal of the game but second goal of the game.
Long Beach State will face the host of the tournament UC San Diego tomorrow at 9:50 a.m. after the Tritons lost to Loyola Marymount in overtime today. The winner will advance to the fifth-place game.
