Feb. 7, 2016

Long Beach, Calif. -

Long Beach State women's water polo put on an offensive show, dominating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 20-5 with a 12-goal second half. Sophomore Virginia Smith led the Beach with five goals, and freshman Annabel Harman added three.

Both players scored the first four goals for LBSU in the first quarter, two goals apiece.

The 49ers got off to a quick start in the match after winning the sprint, as Harman scored her first with just 20 seconds off the clock. She scored back-to-back with her second coming at the 3:07 mark.

Smith took over from there, scoring two in the last two minutes of the first. The Athenas kept within one, grabbing three goals going into the second quarter.

Pressing defense and hands in the passing lane worked in the 49ers favor, blanking Claremont in the second quarter.

On the offensive side, Smith scored another pair of goals as Harman and senior Leigh Auth added one, increasing LBSU's lead to 8-3 to end the half.

Junior Daniela Screnci opened up the third with her first goal of the season coming at the 6:28 mark. Claremont answered right back with a goal of their own. Smith netted her last goal on a 6-on-5 man advantage, making the lead 10-4 in favor of the Beach.

The Athenas scored another with under two minutes left in the quarter, cutting their deficit to five.

Freshman Tori Morrissey continued her scoring streak with a pair of goals in the third. The first came off a 5-meter penalty shot with 1:01 left in the quarter, and the second with just over 30 seconds left to give LBSU a 12-5 advantage going into the final quarter.

The fourth was all Beach as sophomore Marriette Harris grabbed five saves in the quarter to blank Claremont.

LBSU closed the match with seven different 49ers scoring in the eight-goal quarter as sophomore Bridget Reynolds grabbed two goals.
