LONG BEACH, Calif. - A late Long Beach State surge came up just short as the eighth ranked San Diego State Aztecs help off the 12th ranked 49ers 5-4 in a women’s water polo game on Sunday. Kelly Ringel came up with several impressive saves and totaled 12 in the game to keep the 49ers in it.
Scoring came at a premium over the first three quarters as neither goalie was allowing much into the net. Ringel made eight saves in the first half alone and Rachel Mitchell was equal to the task with eight of her 13 saves coming in the first half.
The Aztecs never trailed in the game despite the score remaining close throughout. They scored first when Alyssa Diacono found the back of the net ealy in the first quarter. It wasn’t until late in the second quarter that either team was able to light up the scoreboard.
Taelor Moreno scored within two minutes left in the half and Anique Hermann scored on a 5-meter shot with just 12 seconds left. The 49ers just snuck in their first goal when Justine Morgan fired one past the keeper as time expired.
Ringel stopped all four shots she faced in the third while Chelsea Parks notched her first goal of the contest to pull The Beach within one heading into the fourth.
SDSU came out firing and looked to have put the game out of reach with two quick goals. Moreno scored again just over a minute into the quarter and Carina Carballo extended the lead to 5-2 with a goal at the 5:20 mark.
Parks drove in her second goal with 3:14 left to breathe a little of life back into The Beach. Just 32 seconds later Morgan scored her second goal to bring The Beach back within one.
The final two minutes brought more chances for the Beach as a shot went off the crossbar on one possession and the next shot went off the left post. With both shots narrowly missing, the Aztecs were able to cling to the lead and the win.
The Beach hits the road next week and heads to the Triton Invitational in San Diego, Calif. for four games.
