SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The 10th-ranked Long Beach State women’s water polo team finished its first weekend with a 3-1 record after an 8-4 win over Bakersfield and a 13-3 win on Claremont on Sunday. Justine Morgan scored six goals to lead the 49ers through the day.

Game 1: LBSU 8 – CSUB 4

The middle quarters again proved to be crucial for The Beach on Sunday. The teams traded goals over in the first quarter but LBSU held the Roadrunners off the board in both the second and third quarters. Kelly Ringel made 13 saves in the winning effort.

With The Beach holding a 4-1 advantage in a low-scoring affair, both teams burst out offensively in the fourth. Bakersfield went off for three goals but the 49ers were not to be outdone. They went on to double their total in the final quarter with four goals of their own.

Justine Morgan led the way for The Beach with three goals and Coriann Snyder added in two. Leigh Auth, Hillary Veselik and Kayla Robert capped the scoring with a goal apiece.

Niki DeLeon scored twice to lead Bakersfield.

Game 2: LBSU 13 – CMS 3

The Beach jumped out to big lead and never let Claremont-Mudd-Scripps back in the game on the way to a 13-3 win. Justine Morgan scored another three goals and Kayla Robert pitched in three goals of her own.

LBSU went up quickly in the game, scoring five goals in the first quarter and holding the Athenas scoreless. Two of Claremont’s goals came in the second quarter as the Athenas closed the gap with a 2-1 advantage in the quarter to a 6-2 score.

The Beach responded after halftime with another shutout quarter, holding a 4-0 advantage in the third. The lead continued to rise in the fourth with a 3-1 Beach advantage to close things out.

Alexis Butler made the start in goal, making six saves. Alba Dominguez played the final minutes in goal but was not forced to make a save. Emily Matheson and Justine Morgan each scored twice with Leigh Auth scoring once. Newcomers Kellie Guerin and Faith O’Malley each scored their first career goals at The Beach.

Next week, LBSU hosts San Diego State on Sunday at noon.
