Beach Water Polo Drop Two To End UCSB Winter Invite

Freshman newcomer tied for scoring a team-high five goals during the UCSB Winter Invite

Long Beach State women’s water polo dropped their last two games of the UCSB Winter Invitational to No. 2 UCLA, 11-4, and No. 20 Wagner, 8-7.

The Bruins blanked LBSU to start the match, and held the Beach to just one goal in the first half. Freshman Tori Morrissey continued her consistent scoring from yesterday’s matches, finding the net in the second quarter with a lob from the perimeter.

UCLA went on to score three more in the third, while sophomore Virginia Smith scored her first goal of the day with a shot from the perimeter to trail 7-2 going into the fourth.

Seniors Leigh Auth and Emily Matheson grabbed their first goals of the season in the final quarter, both from 6-on-5 man advantages.

The Bruins continued to score, adding four goals to end the match with the win, 11-4.

Morrissey found the net once again, scoring the first goal of the match against the Seahawks. Wagner came back with three more goals to upend the Beach 3-1 in the first.

Freshman Annabel Harman added another goal in this tournament, the first of the day, with a perimeter shot to trail the Seahawks 4-2 at halftime.

Sophomore Emily Garczynski scored her first goal of the season on a 6-on-5 advantage, making the deficit just two at 5-3. The Seahawks got off two more goals before Morrissey netted another one with a shot from the perimeter. LBSU went into the fourth trailing 7-4.

The Beach started the fourth with a goal from senior Jessica Brooks that cut the deficit to just two. Four minutes late, Wagner scored their last goal at the 2:33 mark to increase their lead, 8-5.

Smith netted her first goal of the match just under 30 seconds later, cutting the deficit once again to two. With just 17 seconds left on the clock, Smith found the back of the net to trail by just one.

The Beach showed a late surge in the match up with Wagner, holding the Seahawks to just one goal in the fourth but couldn’t find the tying goal in the end.
