Santa Barbara, Calif. -

Long Beach State women’s water polo fell short in the first day of the UCSB Winter Invitational, dropping matches to No. 4 California, 8-3, and No. 8 San Jose State, 9-6.

LBSU played Cal for the first match of the day and kept with the Golden Bears in the beginning, but the Beach couldn't come back from two scoreless quarters.

Cal scored the first goal of the match, but Beach freshman Annabel Harman netted her first goal of the season on a man advantage to tie the match back up. The Golden Bears went on to score six more goals through the next two quarters to go up 7-1 going into the last quarter.

The Beach found a rhythm in the fourth, adding two goals both from the perimeter. The first came from freshman Tori Morrissey at the 3:15 mark of the fourth quarter, and the second from sophomore Luiza Moraes with less than 30 seconds left. Cal scored another goal to end the match in their favor, 8-3.

Later that day, the Beach picked up their offense, but the surge was too late for a comeback.

SJSU struck first, but sophomore Alexandra Massier tied the match early with a goal from the center. The Spartans came back late in the quarter to lead 2-1 going into the second. Harman scored her second goal of the day with a shot from the perimeter, but SJSU came back with three goals in the second to go up 5-2 in the half.

The Beach grabbed a pair of goals in each of the last two quarters, but so did SJSU as they maintained a four-goal lead until the end.

Last season’s third-leading scorer, sophomore Virginia Smith netted her first goal of the season on a 6-on-5 man advantage, and Morrissey scored her second goal of the day on a power play. Both goals came in the third quarter.

Sophomores Smith and Massier scored their second goals of the match in the fourth. Smith netted a shot from the perimeter, while Massier scored on the man advantage.
