Barber, Xue Earn Final Big West Weekly Awards

Nov. 28, 2016

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Beach picked up two more weekly awards to close out the season on Monday, as senior Nele Barber and freshman YiZhi Xue won in the same week for the third time this season. Barber was named Big West Player of the Week for the fourth time this year and Xue picked up her second Freshman of the Week nod.

Barber recorded her 22nd double-double of the season and 45th of her career in a win over Denver on Saturday. The senior from Berlin, Germany, also led the Beach in both kills and digs in both matches over the weekend. First, she had 12 kills and 14 digs vs. North Texas, then upped those numbers with 18 kills and 15 digs vs. Denver in the season finale. Barber also had a pair of aces in each match to help the Beach close the season on a five-match winning streak.

In just two seasons at Long Beach State, Barber has been named Big West Player of the Week eight times. She now sits alone in second place for most Plater of the Week wins in program history, trailing only Danielle Scott’s nine.

Xue has now won two Freshman of the Week awards and was also named Defensive Player of the Week once this season. In all three of her victories, Barber has been named Player of the Week alongside her. The middle from Nanjing, China, had a productive weekend, registering 10 kills and 11 kills, respectively. She now has 10 matches with double-digit kills this season. Xue recorded her first career double-double in the win over North Texas, matching her career high with 11 blocks to go with those 10 kills.

In total, Long Beach State won 10 weekly awards this season, tying with Hawai’i for the most in the conference. Ashley Murray (Player of the Week) and Hailey Harward (two-time Defensive Player of the Week) were the other winners for the 49ers this season.
