Rachel Nieto Named Big West Defensive Player of the Week
Redshirt senior Rachel Nieto set a career high with 22 digs in Friday’s win over UC Riverside, then recorded 22 more in Saturday’s sweep of CS Fullerton to earn Big West Defensive Player of the Week.
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Redshirt senior Rachel Nieto was named the Big West Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, coming off a pair of career-best performances last weekend. This is the first career weekly honor for the Walnut Creek native, who has started the last nine matches at the libero spot.
In last week’s action, Nieto led the Beach with a career-best 22 digs in Friday night’s win over UC Riverside. The following night she again recorded 22 digs, but needed just three sets to get there in a sweep of Cal State Fullerton. She recorded an impressive 11 digs in the third set alone, averaging an impressive 7.33 digs per set for the match. On the season, Nieto has recorded 10 or more digs 13 times, and last weekend’s matches were the first of her career with 20 or more.
This is the second Defensive Player of the Week award for Long Beach State this season, after Hailey Harward picked up the honor on Oct. 2.
Primarily a beach volleyball player at Long Beach State, Nieto returned to the indoor program late last season, and has appeared in every match in 2017. She will be honored this Saturday on Senior Night, as LBSU hosts CSUN at 7 p.m. at Walter Pyramid in its regular season finale.
