Long Beach, Calif. - 49er volleyball legends Brian Gimmillaro, Danielle Scott-Arruda, and Misty May-Treanor have been selected as the 2013 inductees into the Century Club Hall of Fame.
Century Club president John Fylpaa has announced the Hall of Fame class that will be inducted in the club's 57th Annual Sports Night Banquet on February 5, 2013. "It's a special night for the Long Beach Century Club, and an exceptional night for Long Beach State," said Fylpaa.
The Century Club Hall of Fame is the only athletics hall of fame that isn't limited to one particular sport or school, but the focus this year is on both, recognizing three greats of Long Beach State women's volleyball.
Gimmillaro has been the head coach of the Long Beach State women's volleyball team for 28 seasons, a tenure that includes three national championships, eight Final Fours, and a streak of 25 consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Gimmillaro is a member of the AVCA Hall of Fame, and won the AVCA National Coach of the Year award in 1998, after completing the first ever undefeated season in NCAA history.
Misty May-Treanor retired from volleyball after the 2012 London Olympics as the unquestioned greatest beach player of all time, and perhaps the greatest player indoors or on the sand. She and her partner Kerri Walsh Jennings won an unprecedented three straight Olympic gold medals over a 12-year period following her career at Long Beach State. As a 49er, May-Treanor was twice named National Player of the Year, and won the Honda-Broderick Cup her senior year, given to the best NCAA female athlete in any sport.
Danielle Scott-Arruda starred for Gimmillaro from 1990-1993, as a three-time All-American, winning National Player of the Year honors in 1993. While at Long Beach State, she also was named All-Big West as a basketball player, the first time in conference history that an athlete was all-conference in two separate sports. Her greatest accomplishment comes as a five-time Olympian, the first American volleyball player of either gender to achieve that feat.
The trio will be inducted as part of the Century Club's 57th annual Sports Night Banquet, held on the evening of February 5, 2013.
