Oct. 2, 2017

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Beach had a pair of women’s volleyball players earn weekly honors from the Big West on Monday, as both Brooke Earkman and Hailey Harward were recognized for their performances over the weekend. Earkman was named Big West Freshman of the Week and Harward earned Big West Defensive Player of the week.

This is the first weekly honor for Earkman, who made the first two starts of her career this past weekend against Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara. The redshirt freshman from Santa Monica, Calif. set a career high in kills in both matches, recording 13 on Friday and 15 on Saturday. In the win over the Gauchos, Earkman hit a career-best .382 to lead LBSU to a win. In total, she averaged 4.00 kills/set and hit a team-best .256 over the weekend.

For Harward, this is her third career Defensive Player of the Week nod after winning twice in 2016 as a freshman. The sophomore libero from Phoenix had 36 digs across the two matches, averaging 5.14 per set. Harward started the weekend off in impressive fashion, recording 17 digs in the first two sets against Cal Poly on her way to 23 for the match. It was the third time this season that Harward has eclipsed the 20-dig plateau.

Long Beach State returns to action this Thursday with a trip to face UC Irvine at 7 p.m.
