Long Beach State welcomes back the 1998 National Championship team on Oct. 24

Sept. 24, 2008

Long Beach, Calif. - A perfect 36-0 record, Long Beach State's fifth women's volleyball title, the Honda-Broderick Award, and the National Player and Coach of the Year. These are just a few of the accomplishments of the 1998 Long Beach State women's volleyball team, and these great 49ers are teaming up with the athletic department to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their accomplishment.

Led by senior setter Misty May, Long Beach State became the first team in NCAA history to go undefeated, losing just eight games during the entire season on the way to a third NCAA Championship under head coach Brian Gimmillaro. May and middle blocker Benishe Dillard were both named All-Americans, as the 49ers won five matches in the NCAA Tournament without dropping a game before defeating Penn State in the championship match 15-3, 15-10, 13-15, 14-16, 15-12.

In honor of that great team, the 49ers are hosting a 10th anniversary celebration on Oct. 24, when the current Long Beach State team faces UC Davis beginning at 7 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid. The team will be honored during the intermission between sets two and three, recognizing their achievements as a group as well as their continued individual accomplishments.

Prior to the match, the team is also hosting a social reception 5:30 to 6:50 at The Pointe in the Walter Pyramid. Director's Circle and 49er Athletic Club Women's Volleyball Support team members are welcome to attend this semi-formal event. If you are not a member of the aforementioned groups and would like to attend, please contact Wayne Stickney at (562) 985-5910 or wstickne@csulb.edu.
